Enter and Suspend Disbelief
Friday, October 23, 2009 at 09:57AM How is it that art speaks so deeply to our souls? What is it about the deep mystery of God and his love for me that is communicated more clearly in Rembrandt's "Return of the Prodigal" than in the simple words that "God Loves Me." Somehow, the truth is lost in the explicit words. Language carries so much baggage and context. Simple truths become trite cliches. But art somehow surpasses what words are so inadequte to express and speaks directly to my soul. Somehow I can enter into a theatre where a powerful story is told through imaginative artists and I believe in a new way. I can meditate on a painting or sculpture and believe more deeply in the power, beauty and mystery of God. We must explore the arts more fully to communicate God's goodness, his beauty and intention to restore and reconcile humanity to it's original design and relationship with him.
